Fashion Fridays – Pink & Black

Welcome to the second installment of our “What To Wear” series! I’ve designed this series, with the addition of our gorgeous “style boards” provided by AIBP (the International Association of Boudoir Photographers), to help you decide on the perfect outfits to bring along to your boudoir or glamour photo shoot with our studio!

Is vintage your style? High waisted panties, girdles, corsets and pearls are a good place to start. Add in peep toe stilettos and thigh high stockings and you have a perfect, photo ready outfit! Some great places to start shopping for your reproduction vintage and retro lingerie are What Katie Did and Kiss Me Deadly and (one of my new favorites thanks to a fabulous recent client) Secrets In Lace.

Are you a modern, chic kind of girl? Minimal coverage and satin and lace are gorgeous and super sexy! Want to glam it up? Trade your thigh-high stockings for thigh-high boots! Details are what make these looks uniquely yours, so don’t be afraid to layer on the accessories! You can never go wrong with dramatic rhinestones but luxurious layers of pearls are just as at home here! Optional accessories include opera gloves, lace stockings, hair accessories and sky-high stilettos! Try Federick’s of Hollywood and AMI Clubwear.

Perhaps you dream and classic and timeless appeal? A matching bra and panty set with a garter belt and black stockings is a perfect choice that will never go out of style! You can’t go wrong with Victoria’s Secret and for stunning choices for girls who are rocking their curves, check out Hips & Curves.

Our stunning style board features a daring, modern look, a classic take on pink and black and also a more modest option. If you click on the board below it will take you to Polyvore, where you’ll be able to see each outfit broken down into its individual pieces, along with prices and where to buy them! There is something for every budget, too, from Agent Provocateur to Target!

Pink & Black Peek-a-Boo

Introducing: Airbrush Makeup

I’m excited to announce a brand new addition to our client-pampering lineup… professional airbrush makeup applications! We are thrilled to have added a professional Temptu airbrush machine to our makeup room and it has taken our makeovers to a whole new level! Airbrushing is more than just a current trend, it is a staple in Hollywood and on the runway. Airbrush makeup is faster to apply than traditional foundation and provides flawless, lightweight, opaque coverage for most skin types. There are many skin conditions that can also be helped tremendously with airbrushing… including rosacea, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, sun damage and more.

Below I have an example of Katey, our wardrobe designer, before and after her makeup application. Katey has some natural redness to her skin, as most women with her coloring do.  You can see that her skin tone has been evened and smoothed, even without the use of Photoshop. The natural redness has been covered flawlessly and then blush has been airbrushed on, along with contouring of her jaw, cheekbones and nose. This makeup was applied for a photo shoot, so the blush is a bit heavier and a bit brighter than it would be for an event or daytime wear. NO retouching has been done to either of these images, they are both straight out of the camera.

If you are interested in airbrush makeup please let me know during your consult. Some skin types do respond better to traditional foundation, so we can decide together whether airbrushing will give you the results you desire and whether it is the best choice for your shoot.

Guest Post: Perfect Photo Shoot Skin with Brittany Moody

Today on our blog we have a guest post! Brittany Moody of Brittany Made Me Pretty stopped by with some must-have tips on how to achieve perfect skin for your photo shoot with us here at Lost Highway Imaging. Brittany is not only a guest blogger here on our site but she is also a guest makeup artist! Since her move back to CA a few months ago we’ve been planning a return trip for her to Connecticut! It looks like she’ll be returning to our Preston, CT studio for a week in October but, in the meantime, here is some of her best advice of skin prep for your boudoir, glamour, pinup or beauty session! Below you will find Brittany’s words of wisdom for gorgeous, glowing, sexy skin!

ct-boudoir-photography-makeup

You booked your boudoir session, you picked your outfits and lingerie, you even bought those sky high heels that you’re prepared to break your ankles in. That’s it, right? There can’t be anything else you need to prep for. What about your skin? Well that’s what the makeup artist is for right? Wrong my friend. Makeup may be able to cover a multitude of sins, but it can only go so far. Your personal care can make a world of difference in the end result of your makeup application. I put together a short list of some skin prep you can do at home before your big shoot to help you look even more stunning!

Hydrate:  Drink plenty of water and keep your skin hydrated! Foundation does not go on smoothly over rough dehydrated skin. This can definitely show up in your pictures and it isn’t pretty.

Moisturize: People tend to over look skin care and focus on trying to find a foundation that will fix whatever they don’t like about their skin, kind of like a band aid. You can temporarily cover a wound with a band aid, ultimately the wound needs to heal. One of the most common habits I’ve seen is people completely skip moisturizer. Giving the skin the moisture it needs is super important for all skin types. If you’re dry, find a rich formula that works for you. If you’re normal, a light moisturizer should be fine, and if you are oily, I’d try an oil control lotion. Don’t forget your body! Moisturized skin looks youthful!

Sleep: Get plenty of rest the night before your shoot. Your makeup artist may be able to cover up your little eye baggies but you won’t feel your best. When you don’t feel your best, you don’t look your best.

Exfoliate: Depending on your skin type, getting rid of that dull top layer of skin can make a huge difference in your skin’s appearance. Smooth skin looks so much healthier than dull dry skin.

Hair Removal: Don’t forget to wax, shave, or tweeze! If these are regular parts of your beauty routine make it a point to get them done. Nothing like professional hi res photos to remind you, “You forgot to shave your under arms.”

Tanning: If you MUST tan, I suggest spray tan! Much less damaging to skin than laying out in the sun and leaving your skin vulnerable to getting burned. No one wants to show up bright red and in pain on the day of their shoot. (Note from Beth: PLEASE try not to tan. If you feel that you absolutely must, please contact me and talk about it first. Tan lines are very, very difficult to remove with editing!)

Hair: Day old hair holds styling a bit better than fresh clean hair. So of all the things on this list to forget, forget to wash your hair the day of your shoot.

The Making Of Marie Antoinette – Behind the Scenes

It is no secret that I am love with French everything. I love their architecture, their food (minus the escargot), their interior design, their fashion, their art… pretty much all of it. I started taking French in the eighth grade and took it through college (though I’d be lucky if I could order at a restaurant and find a bathroom in fluent French… foreign languages aren’t my strong suit). And, because of my love of decadence, opulence and excess, I am obviously totally in love with Marie Antoinette. I’ve read all of the historical fiction that exists about her and my home office/dining room is an homage to her and French design in general. This is my editing room/dining room in it’s natural state:

Day 1

When I first met Brittany, my makeup artist and hairstylist (who recently moved back to CA but will still be guest starring around here every so often, lol) we wanted to collaborate on a personal project together. The very first idea she threw out was Marie Antoinette and I knew it was meant to be! We were always so busy with clients that we never found time to shoot it… until she announced that she would be moving back to her home state of California. We knew it was time to make it happen! We’d both been collecting ideas and props for a while an, in a short 3 weeks, we pulled it all together!

I made the wardrobe, the faux cupcakes and built the set. Brittany researched hair, makeup, styling and planned the look right down to each eyelash! Below you’ll see photos of the project in progress… and because we got crunched for time you’ll see some iPhone photos thrown in there, too! Very professional of me, I know! Haha!

First came the cupcakes. The lady at Home Depot looked at me like I had three heads when she asked what I was making with Plaster of Paris, joint compound and styrofoam and I answered “cupcakes.” Home Depot employees no longer ask questions about what I buy. Hahaha!

Corset: Phase 3 – Working on the bows and hand stringing the pearls (and on to my lovely iPhone photos, lol… time crunch!). I owe huge thanks to my best friend Laura for staying up with me and making this until 2am.. and for making each of those bows by hand and stringing the pearls on one by one!

Then this brilliant piece of art suddenly came up on Craigslist (I’ve been searching for one for over a year) and I HAD to have it! My husband drove 2 hours to go picked it up at 8pm on a Saturday night! I steam cleaned it at midnight and started gold leafing it first thing the next morning! (Those are my kids heads… they are testing out the gold leaf!)

photo-7

AMAZING what a couple of steam cleanings and a metric ass ton of gold leaf can do! I might marry this couch…. I am irrationally in love with it! (The left side is still wet from steam cleaning, lol!)

Then it was the big day!! Brittany did Beth’s hair and makeup while I put the finishing touches on her wardrobe (and by that I mean I sewed her bloomers, lol!)

The Devil is in the details, as they say… <3

And then it was time to pull it all together and make magic!!

I also want to sincerely thank the team that made this all happen!!! I couldn’t do it without you guys!!

I should also probably thank my husband for tolerating an enormous set build taking up 3 rooms of our house for 2 weeks and spending hours in the car to pick up a ridiculously heavy couch on a Saturday night! Oh yeah, and spending 2 months scouring flea markets for props, vintage lace and 30 pounds of vintage costume pearls!

Pinup Editing: A Before & After

So, on the heels of my last blog post (you can see it here: Can You Make Me Thinner?), I was talking with a group of friends and the conversation turned to body image, editing and changing the way a woman looks. Sometimes it is hard for a women to visualize what editing can do since we only ever see the “after” in the media. We see the results of careful retouching (and sometimes not-so-careful…lol) around of every day, often times not even noticing it!

In my past post I talked about how to editing process works at our studio and how I handle my retouching. Sure, that is all great and good, but for someone who doesn’t sit in front of the computer all day doing it, it can be really hard to imagine the results. When I look at a proof image I already know exactly what I am going to “do” when I edit it. I can picture the finished image in my head 9 times out of 10. I try to remember though, that it isn’t like that for most people (No lie, I DREAM about editing pretty often, lol!).

So anyway, one friend mentioned that I should show “Before & Afters” of finished photos. I’ve been working on a gallery of Before & After transformations of my clients… documenting what they look like the moment they walk through the studio door and then showing a final, finished photo from their shoot. While I can explain how and what I edit, it would be a thousand times as powerful to SHOW it! I laughed… not because I thought it was a silly idea (because I thought it was brilliant!) but because I couldn’t imagine asking someone to show an unedited photo from their session. Editing is 50%  art and 50% magic and I wouldn’t want to ruin the impact of either by showing a side by side. Then the real magic happened… my friend suggested I use her recent Valentine’s pinup image as an example. Well, I’m surprised no one had to pick me up and put me back in my chair!! I never expected anyone to volunteer for the cause!

So I went home and sent her the “before,” which she hadn’t seen yet. Her response… “Wow! I hadn’t realized you did that much work!” Lol! But really, I didn’t do that much work to her at all! It was pretty much just the normal, standard changes that I make to most pinup photos. It is important to remember that, if we are talking about the painted pinups of Vargas and Elvgren, the girls weren’t real!!! They were PAINTINGS! Want to see some of the photo references for Gil Elvgren’s paintings? Look here… it is brilliant… http://www.amusingplanet.com/2011/04/gil-elvgrens-pin-up-girls-and-their.html

Here’s an example:

elvgren-pin-ups3[3]

Pinups are a fantasy, an illusion, perfectly flawless! If you look at the paintings, all of the girls have impossibly long legs, perfectly perky boobs, huge hair, itty-bitty waists, tiny feet… you get the idea! Part of reproducing this look is in the impossible proportions! I’m not saying you won’t be you… but I am saying that I “do” more to a pinup photo than other styles I shoot. Of course, I CAN do this kind of editing to any photo from your session if you request it!

So, here is her “before” image, straight out of the camera with absolutely nothing done to it…

Before-web

She obviously looks lovely! There were a few changes to be made in the process of creating a “pinup” though! First, her tummy will get a little push in. It is important to point out that this pose does this to EVERYONE! Go ahead, try it right now and you’ll see what I mean! Plus, as much as love Frederick’s corsets, they don’t have the steel bones and lung-crushing power of the high-end options! The little tricep bump on her upper arm also comes from posing and pulling the arm back against the body… absolutely normal. For most of my other styles of photography, these posing issues are handled while shooting. Pinup is an exception, though, because the poses are classic! I can deal with a little extra editing to get that perfect, classic pose!

Here is the “after” of this same image:

pinup-editing-photoshop-ct-pinup-photographer-pin-up-girl

You’ll see the obvious changes… some minor body shaping, bigger hair, improvement of the fit of the corset and pushing the tummy into compensate for the pose. Pinup calls for that perfect, porcelain skin, bright eyes and that pop of every detail in her wardrobe. Some of the shaping you see has nothing to do with actual reshaping of her body either but, instead, manipulating the highlights and shadows. And, as you can see, she obviously needed no help in the cleavage department! LOL! I also removed the distracting corset string and added some extra rose petals.

So there you have it. A little art, a little magic and a gorgeous end result perfectly balanced between retro and modern.

 ct-pinup-photos

A HUGE thank you to this lovely girl for encouraging me to post this and for allowing herself to be “dissected” for the sake of art! Words can’t even describe how grateful I am! <3
