An Interview With Stephanie

I was lucky enough to meet Stephanie last year, when she came in for her very first photo shoot ever! She wanted to do a combination of vintage pinup photography and 1940’s-era lounge singer glamour photos. We had such an awesome shoot and Stephanie even sang during the lounge singer set to get fully into the moment. Her incredibly beautiful voice nearly brought me to tears! She was a natural in front of the camera and is just breathtaking. Not only is she beautiful, but she’s incredibly bright, driven and confident… which was reflected in her images!

Stephanie has had a big year… she decided to follow her heart and pursue her love of music as a career! The first step in that journey was to create a professional portfolio in order to brand herself as an artist and performer. I was incredibly honored when she contacted me saying that she would love for me to be a part of the project with her. We started bouncing ideas around, sharing Pinterest boards, discussing hair, makeup and styling and determining an overall feel for the shoot. Her inspiration images were fantastic and the closer we came to the big day, the more excited I was! When she arrived at our Connecticut glamour studio and showed me all of her wardrobe choices I knew we were going to create something REALLY special… and we did! Stephanie was also very excited to participate in our interview series, so please read below for her experience in her own words!

LHI: What initially made you decide to book a photo shoot with us?

Stephanie: I was looking to build a professional portfolio in order to market myself as a musician. I wanted to have very genuine and high quality images that would not only portray my own style but also my true personality. As the current lead vocalist for “The Fake Experience” – a local cover band here in Connecticut – and as a recently accepted student of Berklee College of Music, my portfolio needed diversity and originality in order to be used for future projects. It was easy to confirm that I would achieve all that is listed above and more with Lost Highway Imaging.

Visit www.facebook.com/thefakeexperience for upcoming events and information.

LHI: You had a shoot with us last year. What made you want to come back and do it again?

Stephanie: My shoot the previous year was actually my first photo shoot! I had no prior modeling experience or professional photography experience. From the moment I contacted Lost Highway Imaging to the moment I completed that first photo shoot last year, I experienced exceptional customer service! I received such efficient communication, wonderful guidance, helpful tips, and truly excellent treatment throughout the entire process that I simply knew I’d be back as soon as I could. Seeing how my original idea had come to life and holding those timeless photographs in my hand provided me with an indisputable accomplished feeling.

LHI: What was your favorite part of your shoot?

Stephanie: I would say my favorite part of the shoot happens in the very beginning when you sit down and watch yourself transform. Lost Highway Imaging provides you with such talented individuals that simply take care of everything! My hair, make-up, and clothes we’re absolutely beautiful. In between outfit changes, I would catch a glimpse of my hair and make-up and smile…!! I think the best way to describe it is that you become a superstar for a day, with superstar treatment, and superstar results.

LHI: Why should women treat themselves to this experience?

Stephanie: Every single woman should treat herself to this experience at least ONCE in her lifetime because it is an incredibly empowering experience! It allows you to see how beautiful we each can be… immediately increases your confidence… captures you forever with all your perfectly imperfect flaws or flawlessness… and that is something women can cherish forever!! A timeless photograph.

LHI: If you were going to tell your best friend about your experience with Lost Highway Imaging, what would you tell her?

Stephanie: I brought my best friend with me – my mother! I had told her how incredible I had felt during my first photo shoot that she insisted on coming the second time around. I told her what I would tell anyone who would ask me though… DO IT! Treating yourself to a day where you are treated like royalty, a place where you can feel comfortable in your own skin, are allowed to be yourself at all times (or whoever you want to be for the day since dressing up is one of the Lost Highway Imaging specialties), a place where your crazy ideas can come to life, and receive images you can show your grandchildren when all is said and done… It just makes sense to do it!! I know I will treat myself to it again.

P.S. My mother is signing up for her own photo shoot this summer. Enough said.

Here are our gorgeous results – a perfect beginning to a developing artist’s portfolio! Hair by Alex Williams and makeup was a collaboration between Beth Claire and Alex Williams.

Boudoir Photo Shoot Styling featuring Rebel Rose

At least 99% of the women who come into our Connecticut studio are not models. For most of them, the last time they had a professional photo taken of themselves was their senior year of high school. I LOVE working with everyday women and my boudoir photography studio caters almost exclusively to them! Every once in a while, though, I look to collaborate with a local professional model to flex my creative muscles and try new techniques, poses, wardrobe and backdrops. Like anyone else, not every new creative attempt I make is successful and so I look to collaborate with other pros from time to time for “test” sessions. Rebel Rose is an internationally published model who hails from Boston, Massachusetts. Aside from being a beautiful woman and a talented model, she’s also a very skilled cosmetologist and makeup artist who does almost all of her own styling for her photo shoots.

As it turned out, our brand new peacock blue, gold-leafed Victorian couch was finished and in the studio just a few days before Rebel’s shoot with me. We knew we HAD to use it! I sourced an outfit and accessories for her to match the couch and she planned her dramatic, fashion-inspired makeup to match! We also planned 3 additional looks to round out our afternoon! Planning looks is an integral part of your boudoir or glamour photo shoot. No matter what type of photography you desire (We DON’T only photograph lingerie, lots of our women choose clothed glamour sessions!), wardrobe styling is a huge part of your shoot! You don’t need to be Versace to create a great outfit… you just need to keep some basic questions in mind. Does it fit? Does it flatter? Does it match? Is it interesting to look at? If you keep these questions in mind as you are choosing your wardrobe, you’ll find it much easier to put your outfits together! Not sure how to decide what fits or flatters? What is matching vs. coordinating? Not sure how to choose colors or pair textures? Keep an eye out for our upcoming blog post, How To Choose Lingerie That Flatters, due out next week.

Also, I LOVE wardrobe styling and this is an optional service that we are thrilled to be able to offer to our clients! If you are interested in personal shopping services, whether we shop WITH you or even FOR you, please inquire and we’ll be glad to give you more information!

To get started, I’ll break down the wardrobe that Rebel and I chose for her shoot. Our first look was romantic and neutral, with a Victoria’s Secret bra and panty set (Victoria’s Secret) and big rhinestone earrings combined with dramatic cat eyes and ruby red lips. This look is timeless and will look just as fabulous in 20 years as it does today. I wanted her pale skin and piercing eyes to take center stage, so we kept the rest of the set and wardrobe neutral. The Victorian bedroom set is our most popular set, and almost all women want to use it at some point during their shoot… usually for at least one outfit, often for two. The set is very simple and elegant, made up of creamy ivories, rich gold silk curtains, a gorgeous tufted headboard and a touch of sequin detailing. It looks beautiful with almost all lingerie and is particularly suitable for creams, ivories, pastels and black lace. The Victorian styling is versatile enough for everything from modern lingerie to vintage 40’s and 50’s looks.

The next set we showcased was our sea of pink tulle. This pink looks beautiful with all skin tones, makeup styles and poses. Rebel and I chose a purple and black lacy chemise with bow details and eyelash trim. The underwire cups give great shaping and lift for back-laying poses and the color was perfect to highlight the purple streaks in her hair. The purple of the lingerie isn’t too light or too dark, so it coordinates perfectly with the dusty pink tulle. (This chemise is a size L and is available in the studio to borrow for your own shoot.)

This look was intended to be very modern and fashion-forward. We wanted something super sexy without being over-the-top. The bodysuit is from the Cosmopolitan line carried by JC Penney last year. Unfortunately, they have discontinued their lingerie line (though their bras and panties are still available) but you can still find pieces on eBay and Etsy. The Cosmo line takes inspiration from many of the high-end lingerie brands without the exorbitant price tag. Bodysuits are one of my very favorites because they hug the body, enhance the natural hourglass shape and can also be fitted with supportive panels to nip and tuck in all the right places. This particular piece was made of a satin stretch with underwire cups for extra support. The pattern and color worked perfectly with the couch and the heavy beaded necklace finishes off the look with a bit of shimmer. (This outfit is also available to borrow, along with the necklace.)

IMG_0184-webIMG_0172-webIMG_0169-web

This retro-inspired dress is SO much fun!! 1970’s mod is coming back in style and I couldn’t resist this dress! The bright orange and playful zippers and mid drift cutout are so much fun! We wanted to wrap up the day with something more fashion than boudoir, so we chose this dress paired with electric blue faux alligator heels. The mix of retro and modern was super fun and gave us a chance to play with posing on a simple, solid backdrop.

Putting My Money Where My Mouth Is…

So recently a segment on boudoir photography was featured on the Florida news station WPTV. I’m sure you are thinking… well that’s great… but what does a Florida news station have to do with your Connecticut boudoir photography studio? Well, it’s a long story so I’ll give you the short version!

A colleague and good friend, Renee Zona of Spotlight Sexy in Boca Raton, Florida was approached by WPTV to do a segment on the rising popularity of boudoir photography with women in the past few years. The reporter was interested in learning more about why women are seeking sexy lingerie photos of themselves and what the “behind the scenes” looks like for a boudoir photo shoot. Renee was excited but then it occurred to her that she was going to need a client who was willing to allow herself to be filmed throughout the whole process… even before makeup! She had photographed me the year before while I was working in Ft. Lauderdale just for fun and to try out some new lights and techniques and we had such a blast! When she called and asked me if I wanted to be her “stand-in” client for the day I was incredibly excited… for about 5 minutes… then I was SCARED. LOL!! It suddenly occurred to me that I was going to be in my underwear on TELEVISION. No Photoshop, no skin smoothing or arm slimming… just 100% me.  I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a moment of panic.

Then, I instantly felt like a hypocrite. I tell my clients every day that they are beautiful. And I mean it. I tell them they are perfect right this minute and just as they are. Not 10 pounds lighter, not with a tan, not with a new haircut or Botox or a pair of Spanx. I ask women to be brave and bold and trust that I am going to make them look and feel beautiful and confident and strong. But… but… BUT… I made every excuse for myself… the reporter will be filming me from different angles than the photographer and there will be imperfect lighting and there won’t be Photoshop and what if I look bad… or what if I look fat or what if my butt looks awful… or you can see my stretch marks… or… and this went on for days.

Commence crash diet and obsessive lingerie shopping for outfits that would flatter every inch of me no matter what the angle (and before you go typing that into Google… it doesn’t exist. If it did, I would have found it, lol!). Then, as suddenly as it started, it stopped. I decided I could embrace the experience, be excited, and put all of my trust into Renee… or I could continue to worry, fret and obsess my way into a bleeding ulcer. I stopped worrying, stopped counting every calorie that went into my mouth and found pretty lingerie that I liked and thought suited me the best it could. I’ve had 4 kids. I have stretch marks and extra skin on my belly. I break out and get zits on my face and dark circles under my eyes from not sleeping enough. My butt is flatter than I would like, even with the 100 squats I do every day. AND SO FREAKING WHAT? It is what it is and just like I have things about myself that I don’t care for, I also have things that I love, both physical attributes and non-physical ones as well. I decided I was going to embrace the whole experience and love every minute of it. When I was little my grandmother always used to tell me that every situation in your life is what you make of it. If you decide to be unhappy, you will be. If you decide to happy, you will be. I decided to be happy and embrace the opportunity to do something truly once-in-a-lifetime!

I’m sure some people sat in front of their TV that night and belittled me… not only for my flat butt or few extra pounds or big nose… but for being willing to put it all out there… to go on TV in my less-than-modest lingerie and not apologize. And you know what? That is okay with me! I won’t please everyone and that’s fine. Maybe one woman watched it and said “Hey, if she can do it, so can I!” and then maybe she did. And maybe she got the rush and the empowerment and the confidence from taking a risk and letting herself feel sexy for a day! And maybe she’ll have those photos for a lifetime and treasure them forever just because I was brave enough to be 100% me on TV.

Take a look and if you feel inspired to be pampered and beautiful and empowered you know where to find me. 🙂

Renee, you were amazing. Thank you for everything and for inviting me to share this opportunity with you. I am so blessed that our paths crossed in life. And thank you also to Ashleigh Walters, the most wonderful, sweet, kind reporter I’ve ever had the pleasure to know! Your reassurance and final edit made me feel safe and beautiful and like a star!

An Interview with Leanne

Leanne and I have something in common that I knew about her from the minute I got her first message… we are both obsessive planners! LOL! From the first moment, she had a million questions! Right away, I loved her attention to detail and her commitment to make her shoot the best it could possibly be! It is so much easier for me to create my best work for a client when she is just as committed as I am to making KILLER images! Leanne researched looks she liked, made a Pinterest board full of inspiration images and found a ton of beautiful lingerie to bring with her! She was inspired by the classic, retro looks of Old Hollywood but wanted to modernize it with some sophisticated, classic glamour. When I started getting the pictures of things she’d bought for her session I knew we were going to have SO much fun!! Lots of lace and satin, some vintage polka dots, lots of intricate details and a great sense of how to put it all together! Don’t get me wrong, I am always more than happy to help women put together looks for their boudoir shoot or help them come up with styles and themes for their session… but I also love it when a woman knows what she wants and makes it happen! Planning can sometimes be the most fun part of your boudoir photography experience… it’s an excuse to buy sexy lingerie, try lots of things on and indulge in things you might otherwise skip… like manicures, thigh-high stockings and lacy underwear.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and your photos with the world! Your story is inspiring and I’m so honored that you chose me to be your photographer! You looked absolutely AMAZING and the camera loves you!! I hope you enjoy your photos as much as I enjoyed creating them with you!!

LHI: What initially made you decide to book a boudoir shoot?

Leanne: This February I celebrated my 30th birthday. One of my goals for my 30th birthday was to lose 35lbs, and I did it! I wanted to do something to make my birthday feel special and more importantly make ME feel special and to celebrate all of the hard work and dedication I put into looking and feeling comfortable with myself. I started researching boudoir and pin up photographers in my area and looking at their portfolios. I decided that a boudoir photo shoot was exactly what I wanted to treat myself to for my birthday.

LHI: What was your biggest fear before you booked your shoot? Did it come true and, if not, what happened instead?

Leanne: I didn’t want my photos to be just any old photos, I wanted them to be a reflection my personality and how I see myself. I didn’t know anything about boudoir photo shoots, but I did know that I didn’t want cheesy backgrounds and cheesy props. I wanted my photos to be sophisticated and timeless. I kept thinking, how am I going to really plan this, who is going to do my hair, who will do my makeup, and more importantly what will I wear, or not wear ? I began “pinning” boudoir photography that caught my eye and became inspired. I found several photographers in my area that said they specialize in pin up and boudoir photography. Many of them had nice quality photos, but the poses and backgrounds were not as sophisticated as I had in mind. Finally, I went to Yelp and found Beth Claire with Lost Highway Imaging. I loved all of her work, literally, all of it! I emailed her and within a few hours she emailed me back. Her response was so genuine; I could feel her passion and enthusiasm for her work just from reading her email. I knew that she was who I was looking for.

LHI: What was your favorite part of your photo shoot?

Leanne: Who would do my hair, makeup, and what would I wear? The things that worried me the most turned out the best! I kept thinking, JEEZ, why haven’t I done this before? I remember, after one of the photos, Beth turned the camera around and said, “Look at you.” In disbelief, I replied, “that’s not what I really look like.” She said, “What do you mean, that is what you look like right now.” That made me feel good.

LHI: Why should women treat themselves to this experience?

Leanne: The bigger question is, Why not?! This experience made me feel AMAZING and every woman should feel amazing. I never would have thought that I would ever find myself sitting at work, going through photos of MYSELF on my phone and it making me smile! It sounds strange, I know, but if you can’t relate to this, you should do a boudoir shoot with Beth! My friends and family keep asking me, “why did you do a boudoir shoot?” and “who did you do it for?” The answer to this is simple, I did it for ME! And I would do it again (and again)!

LHI: If you were going to tell your best friend about your experience with Lost Highway Imaging, what would you tell her?

Leanne: If you have ever thought about doing a boudoir shoot, you’ve got to hire Beth. You can just tell that she loves doing what she does. From my initial email to the final reveal, she literally walked me through the entire process and let me know what I should expect and how to prepare. From helping me choose what to wear, to coaching me on every pose, to selecting my final images. It was easy and FUN! Her confidence makes you feel confident and what is better than that!
