An Interview with Miranda – CT Boudoir Photography

Miranda is the kind of girl who walks into a room and brings a tremendously positive energy with her! Her happiness is infectious and she had us all laughing within minutes! She’s also the rare type that flips a switch the moment a camera is turned on her. Her silly, fun, playful attitude was suddenly all business when I picked up my camera and shot our first photo of the day. Her look instantly went sultry, with pouty lips and incomparable bedroom eyes. The camera absolutely LOVES her face and her eyes are hypnotic the moment she “turns it on” and starts modeling. And her curves are the stuff that only perfectly drawn cartoon characters are made of… with a flawlessly beautiful shape that is so classically gorgeous!  I’m so in love with the photos from our session… and watching her eyes as she viewed her images for the first time melted my heart. Miranda was so excited to be a part of our interview series and I was thrilled to be able to share her experience and a handful of her photos with you all!

LHI: What initially made you decide to book a boudoir shoot?

Miranda: Well, actually my mom is the one that showed me on Facebook and she wanted to do it so naturally like mother like daughter I was all for it. When I was really little I was in some pageants and I did really well. However, as I got older my height stopped short while my waist kept going, which made me not the “ideal” type to be in pageants or model anymore so I stopped. It was on my bucket list to do at least one photo shoot and why not half naked with some strangers.

LHI: What was your biggest fear before you booked your shoot? Did it come true and, if not, what happened instead?

Miranda: While I mean the being half naked in front of strangers I think is definitely scary, especially when you are not so comfortable with your body image. Or it could have been the not knowing. Between not knowing what to expect going in and taking the pictures to not knowing what they are going to come out like. There are so many things that run through your mind… and yet it was NOTHING like I could ever imagine. From the first minute to not knowing how to sign up to talking about doing more photos, Beth has been in great communication the entire time. She anwsers every question, gives advice and makes you feel like even though you just met her you have known her for a million years. I was nervous and I didn’t know what to bring, and she walked me through a ton of great ideas for my body type. The day of the shoot was the first day I met her in person, and I was super nervous. But she was extra calming and made me feel at home. And of course stripping down into my underwear and bra was completely not in my daily agenda so it felt strange and of course I was uncomfortable at first, but after a couple minutes of taking the pictures and having encouragement on how well everything looked it was gone…and the fear and nerves went away and I was as left with nothing but empowerment!

LHI: What was your favorite part of your photo shoot?

Miranda: Oh man, I’m supposed to pick just one? Well I think the reveal was the most emotional part. I was with my mom and I mean I loved looking at my pictures, but watching my mom’s pictures be revealed to her for the first time was something you can not put into words. To make a woman feel so beautiful it brings her to tears is a true gift in itself, and Beth has that gift. Even when you do not see it in yourself she can find it. I mean it’s truly unbelievable how this whole experience makes you feel. It makes you look at yourself with new eyes.

LHI: Why should women treat themselves to this experience?

Miranda: Why not?? Who doesn’t like to get pampered and shown the beauty that they have? It is one of the most empowering things that you will ever do in your life! It showcases you, no matter what size, shape, or color you may be, as “perfect” because beauty doesn’t have a limit on it anymore and that’s BEAUTIFUL thing!

LHI: If you were going to tell your best friend about your experience with Lost Highway Imaging, what would you tell her?

Miranda: I already have! I show and tell everyone I meet, because I am so proud and I think everyone else should feel this way too. I tell them that it is the BEST thing you could ever do. They are amazing people to work with. You get pampered and have them highlight your beauty and then show it off. They give great instructions and nothing is ever confusing. You’re having fun, laughing and busting a sweat while you’re taking them. Which is serious work! Then the reveal, which is incredible. It’s something you get to share over and over again with other people you share this with. And it just keeps passing along the line and getting more people to see themselves for what they really are…BEAUTIFUL!

Ever Dream of Having a Personal Shopper?

Do you dream of starring in your very own gorgeous boudoir shoot but feel overwhelmed at the idea of having to choose all those outfits? Maybe you aren’t sure what will look best on your body or you aren’t sure how to put all the pieces together to create a polished, finished look. Don’t despair! You are NOT alone! So many women are unsure of how to dress to highlight their favorite body parts and downplay the ones they don’t love so much! Here at Lost Highway Imaging, we have an option to help all the women out there who aren’t sure how to pull together their final styles… PERSONAL SHOPPING!

A personal shopping session is not only a great way to find out what cuts and styles best flatter your body, they are also FUN! We offer 3 main options for helping you shop.

Virtual Shopping

The first personal shopping option is “virtual shopping.” You’ll provide your full-length, casual photo (cell phone shots are just fine), your clothing sizes and measurements, along with some basic preferences in regards to style, color, pattern and modesty. If you aren’t sure how to take your measurements, we’ll walk you through the process. We will then help you decide what clothing will best flatter your shape and what will give you the look you want, style-wise. Beth, our photographer, will gather options and send you links to some great options (along with sizing suggestions if it is a brand we are personally familiar with). Working within the budget you give us, we’ll put together outfits (including planning items like shoes, jewelry, and clothing available in the studio that will work for your shoot) and you’ll be provided with links to purchase them yourself. You’ll handle the actual ordering of the clothing, we’ll just hold your hand through the process.

Girls’ Day Out
The second option is an actual shopping trip where Beth will help you pick things out in person! We make a trip to the mall (The Crystal Mall in Waterford is our usual go-to) and put together outfits together. From clothing to jewelry and accessories, we cover every look head to toe. Sometimes it is necessary to supplement with some online purchases, especially if we need something very specific (especially for vintage boudoir looks or pinup, as not many real corsets or vintage lingerie pieces are available at the mall) or if we need a bra size that mall stores don’t carry. We plan your budget beforehand and make sure we stay within it while we shop. Not only will you learn how to best dress your body for your shoot, but you’ll also learn tips and tricks to dressing yourself every day and looking super sexy in the bedroom with the most flattering lingerie for your body type! This is an experience that will benefit you for a lifetime, especially if you’ve ever wondered what looks truly flatter you the most!

Supermodel Luxury Service
Supermodels don’t shop for their own shoots and their looks are styled by professionals before they ever even arrive on set. This option is for the woman who truly wants to be pampered and experience what a professional, high-end magazine shoot is like. With our Supermodel Luxury Service every bit of your shopping done for you. You provide Beth with an agreed-upon budget and she purchases everything herself, meeting up with you once before your shoot for a trial run she can make returns/exchanges as needed. With this option, the sky is the limit. Whether you desire genuine La Perla pieces or exquisite silk lingerie imported directly from Paris, you can truly be dressed like the world’s most sought after supermodels.

Mommy Makeover- Get Your Sexy Back!

Miranda was gifted a session at our studio for her birthday. Her mom wanted to give her a special day to go do something just for herself. She is a mom of two small kids, exactly the same ages as my youngest two. It’s no secret that I tend to be emotional (even a sentimental commercial on television can make me cry), but Miranda’s interview really hit home. I’m a mom of four, and I vividly remember when my oldest were 2 and 4. While I loved every minute and wouldn’t change it for the world (and often look back and miss when they were little), I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t HARD. It’s so easy to lose yourself when you are raising little kids. Miranda is not only a wonderful, attentive and nurturing mother, she is also a strong, powerful, confident, beautiful woman. The power to reconnect intimately with herself was there all the time… she just needed a little push to make it happen! I’m honored that she trusted me to reintroduce her to her inner Goddess!

Thank you, Miranda, for being so excited to share your experience. I have a feeling that your words are going to resonate with so many other moms out there. Thank you being willing to open up and be so vulnerable and allow us a glimpse into your feelings about your boudoir photo shoot with us. You are a truly beautiful soul, both inside and out.

LHI: What initially made you decide to book a boudoir photo shoot with us?

Miranda: It’s funny, my mother gave it to me as a gift. She sensed that I was going through a hard time, and that I wasn’t acting like my usual chipper self. She thought I could use a little “me” time, and she was right! I was diagnosed with depression in November and was really struggling with identity issues. I had given up my job to become a stay-at-home mom for my two toddlers—a decision that I will never regret, but one that really did a number on my relationship. All of a sudden, my fiancé and father of my children had taken over the burden of solely supporting our family of four and actually changed his career for us. It became really stressful on our family and created a rift between us. I realized that I had neglected our relationship, that I had changed and was now spending my day completely catering to my children, and that there was little room for romance. I never told him that after I had our kids I was no longer comfortable in my own skin, so making time for us wasn’t that much of a priority for me. I needed to do something to snap myself out of this slump that I had been stuck in.

LHI: What was your biggest fear before you booked your shoot? Did it come true and, if not, what happened instead?

Miranda: My biggest fear would have to be that I wasn’t going to be able to be “sexy” or that my insecurities about my body were going to make me look ridiculous. My body had changed so much after having kids that I thought that I no longer even possessed the ability to be sexy. When I got there I was really nervous, and while getting my hair and makeup done, I told Beth that I was really insecure about what my body had become after having kids, and she did the most amazing thing. She dropped what she was doing and came around to look me right in the eye. She told me that she had four kids and they changed her body too, she instantly made me feel so much better. Here was a woman, and mother that completely understood me, and what had happened after giving birth. She was raw and honest. She gave me confidence that I can still be sexy after having kids.

LHI: What was your favorite part of your shoot?

Miranda: Everything! Being pampered and fussed over was so strange and foreign to me, it was a real treat. Not to mention, the big reveal of what my hair and makeup would look like for my pictures! I felt beautiful and like a women again! The best way I can describe the experience would be when you go out shopping with your best friend. You try on different things and laugh at the ones that just aren’t working, or giggling because you just can’t for the life of you figure out what that strap is for. Then, taking pictures of the different looks, it was nothing like I had imagined. It was so light and fun, and she guided me through different poses with such ease and encouragement that I was actually feeling sexy! She fawned over my every move, which made me feel like a professional model. I felt powerful and confident in my own skin.

LHI: I know that, after your shoot, you talked specifically about moms taking time out to do something like this for themselves. Why do you feel so strongly that women should treat themselves to this experience? What did this experience change for you in your own life?

Miranda: Being a mother you can feel like you can no longer be sexy, whether it be the lack of time, sheer exhaustion, or the fact that bringing your little angels into the world has left your body considerably different…all of a sudden you can barely brush your hair, let alone get dressed up and put on makeup. It can really drag you down. There is so much you have to get done for your family that taking time for yourself becomes rather impossible. There is always a Mount Everest of laundry that’s been piling up or someone that needs something. You tend to put yourself on the back burner until you can barely recognize the face staring at you in the mirror. I know I was one of those women that had just given up. To have someone pamper you and dress you up in super sexy outfits, is a really great ego boost one where you can get a real look at your sexy self, and see that you’ve still got it. That is something that I think all women need to be reminded of. The shoot really pulled me out of my depression. Seeing my photos after feeling like a princess was mind-blowing, and life changing. I felt confidence in myself that I haven’t felt in a long time. It completely changed my relationship. In fact the confidence I gained followed me in all aspects of my life. Even when I was in the grocery store and had what I was hoping was mustard in my hair. I knew what I was capable of and now I had the photographic proof that I still got it. Just because we are mothers doesn’t mean that we have stopped being women!

LHI: If you were going to tell your best friend about your experience with Lost Highway Imaging, what would you tell her?

Miranda: I have told everyone I know about my experience, and how much it has transformed my life. I think everyone should give it a try. It will absolutely change the way you look at yourself. It’s like someone pulled out your inner sexy kitten and made you finally see it, and that is something that no one can ever take away from you.

An Interview with Rachel – Breast Cancer Survivor

I was lucky enough to meet Rachel through a fantastic client who came to my studio last year. When I heard from her again a few months ago I was floored to find out that she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer in both of her breasts. As women, we don’t expect cancer to strike the young and healthy among us, and it is so easy to forget how often that actually happens! Rachel and I are almost exactly the same age and it really hit me hard when I found out her diagnosis. Not even a year before,  she was the picture of health, youth and vibrancy. The reality of it really hit home and I knew we needed to create something really special that celebrated her body and also showcased her fiery, fun, intense personality! When she walked into the studio on the day of her shoot, it didn’t take me more than a minute to realize that nothing about her had changed. She is still the firecracker I knew her to be… and also a serious force to be reckoned with! She was facing her cancer head-on without missing a beat! We both knew it was going to be an emotional experience but I am so glad she entrusted me with creating timeless, beautiful images or her body both before AND after her double mastectomy. I’m still incredibly honored that she shared her experience with me… and I’m so happy that she wanted to share it with all of you, too. We need to talk about breast cancer. We need to love and support those going through treatment, celebrate those who beat it, grieve those we lost and, so importantly, TALK ABOUT EARLY DETECTION! Early detection likely saved Rachel’s life… and it could save your life or the life of someone you love as well!

LHI: Rachel, you have a truly inspiring story to share. Can you start out by telling us a little bit about yourself?

Rachel: Well, lets see…. I’m 30 years old. and umm that’s all I got to say about that- no kids, never married, own a couple businesses (I just bought a bar! lol). That about sums it up!

LHI: You contacted our Connecticut boudoir photography studio after your breast cancer diagnosis when you found out you’d need surgery. Why did you feel like it was so important that you have photographs of your body before your surgery?

Rachel: The decision to have a double mastectomy was really easy. I made it before the doctor even told me what all my options were. But my breasts were a HUGE (literally) defining feature and part of my life. I hated them about 95% of the time, I swore for years that I was going to cut them off as soon as I had children, but the time came sooner than I thought and I had to make a decision, spend the rest of my life getting MRI’s, Mammograms, Ultrasounds, and worrying, or get rid of those babies and live relatively carefree. I chose the latter, but I wanted something wonderful to remember them by. I also thought I might write a book and photograph the whole process, and I knew you were a wonderful photographer.

LHI: What was your favorite part of your photo shoot?

Rachel: My favorite part of the shoot was probably getting my hair and makeup done. I felt like a completely different person. My second favorite part was making funny faces and laughing while you were taking my pictures.

LHI: Looking back, how do you feel about your images now that you’ve been through your first of your series of surgeries?

Rachel: I LOVE my pictures. I particularly love the black and white shadowed one, and my post-surgery pictures too. I feel like you were really able to capture my personality not just my physical self. I really feel beautiful inside and out, even in my after photos I feel it.

LHI: You also asked for something that some might consider unusual… you asked for photographs of your scars directly following your first surgery. What made you want to document that part of your journey in such a raw way?

Rachel: I’m not really sure why I wanted photos of my scars, maybe so I can show my kids someday how strong their mama was, or to give other women some hope. It’s not really that horrible of a thing to go through. Yes, it hurt. Yes, Im still in occasional pain, but really it could have been so much worse.

LHI: Breast cancer can change so much in a woman’s life. What advice would you give to a woman facing a new diagnosis?

Rachel: The only advice I can give you is this – It is what it is, everyone deals with things differently but I think it’s not the end of the world if you catch it early enough, and there’s no sense in getting really upset over something you can’t control. Just find the facts, make a plan, and stick to it. I regret nothing about my decision.

Six weeks later we met at the studio again, this time to capture her beautiful, healthy, post-mastectomy body. Here is one of her favorite post-surgery photos:

Rachel, you are one of the strongest, bravest, most courageous women I have ever been blessed to meet. Your strength, grace and humor are admirable and I am honored that you trusted me to capture this incredibly challenging and transitional time for you. I cannot WAIT for our urban shoot after your reconstruction… we are going to have such a blast! Thank you also goes to Alex Williams for providing Rachel’s beautiful hair and and makeup styling for her pre-surgery session.
